Information
The Evening Classroom-Based Diploma in Italian at the University of Galway introduces students to the fundamentals of the Italian language and helps them develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through interactive, in-person lessons. The programme was established by Prof. Anne O’Connor, who played a key role in designing a curriculum that combines language acquisition with cultural immersion. It is now coordinated by Dr. Andrea Ciribuco, who continues to enhance the course with engaging materials and a communicative, student-centred approach, thanks to the help of Teaching Assistants.

Your italian journey begins here
The Evening Classroom-Based Diploma in Italian at the University of Galway introduces students to the foundations of the Italian language and helps them build competence in all four language skills — listening, speaking, reading, and writing — using carefully selected authentic materials. Classes are held once a week on Monday evenings (6:30-9:30pm), allowing learners with full schedules to balance work, family, or other commitments. Classes consist of a first part of a grammar tutorial, followed by a conversational class.

Dive into italian culture
Over the two years, the curriculum is organised into six modules: three in Year 1 (Italian Language Level 1 Part 1 & Part 2, plus Culture & Language Level 1) and three in Year 2 (Italian Language Level 2 Part 1 & Part 2, plus Culture & Language Level 2). Alongside language mechanics, the course includes a Cultural Module, exploring topics such as Italian cinema, art, history, regional traditions, and much more. This helps students not only understand the grammar but also experience Italian culture.

Who is this diploma for?
The Diploma is suited for beginners or those with little previous knowledge of Italian, who want a structured, supportive and social learning environment. However, even those with some background in Italian can benefit enormously from the in-person classes, the class discussions, and cultural immersion. By completing this Diploma, students gain a recognised qualification that enhances personal, travel or professional life, along with improved confidence in communicating in Italian both in spoken and written form.
